An early gift

Sometimes it really is the little things that mean the most. My aunt was going through old photos and found a picture of me, at 1 year old. She couldn't believe the resemblance to the holiday picture of Katie. She scanned them both and emailed them to me and I am just shocked.

The two pictures are below. I can't even stop looking at them...it just amazes me. Obviously this wasn't meant as a Christmas present, but it is one of the coolest things anyone has ever sent me. It almost makes me want to cry looking at it. My baby looks just like me!

Holiday party #1

At this time of year, it seems that the gift we need most is TIME. I don't know where the time goes and just hope I'm using it wisely! I've been busy preparing for the holidays, finishing school work (on time) and spending time with Katie. She went to the Exxon Mobil holiday party last weekend and had a blast. She did go last year, but was more like a lump of coal (3 months old).

This year was quite different...she ran around like a mad woman and made friends everywhere she went. Luckily, she looked adorable in her cream colored dress with little pearls (even though she spent some time running and sliding on the floor).
Some kids may be scared of the toy soldier on stilts or the fairies with wigs, but not Katie. She took there hands and I think she wanted to bring them home with her.

LOVE THIS PICTURE!
She even sat with Santa and Mrs. Claus. We didn't get any big smiles, but she did like the fact that Mrs. Claus had a stack of holiday books.

Katie went to her a couple times during the party, saying her favorite word "booooohhhk boooooohhhhk".
We all had a great time at the party and look forward to more festivities this holiday. Next up, my first cookie exchange. Ack...I better get cleaning!

Car seats - rear vs. forward facing

For those of you with car seats, you know that rear facing can be a pain when trying to soothe a crying child...or retrieve a toy, which is often the case when Katie flings them around the back seat.

It is mandatory to have the car seat rear facing up to 1 year of age, but there is a huge movement towards keeping children rear facing for as long as possible. As my pediatrician to us, it is easier to fix broken legs (if they jam into the rear seat) than a broken spine (which often happens when a child is forward facing).

I received the below site today that has a video depicting crash tests in both scenarios. I'm not saying what is right or wrong (ok, maybe I am), but just wanted everyone to be informed.

You've got gall...or not!

Happy anniversary to my missing gallbladder! This time last year, we had delayed Thanksgiving due to my emergency gallbladder removal. It recently came up on a mommy blog that I subscribe to, which rehashed the whole episode for me. Everyone agreed that gallbladder attacks are much worse than childbirth.

So, if you are reading this and don't have kids yet...just remember, there is worse pain out there!

Note to gallbladder - I miss you very much...things haven't been the same since. I still get yucky feelings after eating certain foods (I just never pay attention to what they are) and I pretend that my four scars are bullet holes haha. Yes, I'm odd!

Halloween fun

It was technically Katie's 2nd Halloween, but she didn't really participate in her 1st (she was 1 month old). After working 13-15 hour days last week, I left early on Friday because I couldn't miss Halloween! We weren't sure if Katie would understand (and she probably didn't), but she had a blast anyway!

Grandma and Grandpa came over and Katie was a little scared to see Grandma in a big orange pumpkin. She eventually realized it was Grandma and had to keep touching her to make sure.
Grandpa did wear a coconut bra and grass skirt (for about 10 seconds). Luckily, I got it on camera.

We dressed Katie up in her "tulip fairy" costume and let her play with our treats, before we passed them out. This year I added little containers of Play Doh for the kids that were too small for candy. It was a BIG hit!

Katie ran around the neighborhood with Daddy and Grandma and collected a pumpkin full of candy. She loved looking out the front door for more trick or treaters and loved staying up late. Thanks for the candy, Katie! YUM!
Even Baby Jamey came over to visit in his warm dragon costume! We can't wait for next year!

Pumpkin patch - Great Country Farms

Last weekend, Katie, Mommy, Daddy, Uncle Mikey and Caitlin went to Great Country farms in Bluemont, VA. It was a great place and we had a blast. They have tons of activities for little kids (aka Mikey) like mazes, slides, swings, and even a giant bouncing bubble in the ground that must have had 50 kids on it.

The view out there was amazing and we were right next to a couple beautiful mountains. Katie loved the fresh air and got to go through the little petting zoo, watch pigs race and walk through the pumpkin patch. She loved the bumpy ground in the patch and also the open fields of grass. Now that she is walking, it is a whole new experience for her. She walked up and down the pumpkin patch rows giggling and grunting.

I've been experimenting with Movie Maker and think I may get addicted, if I could only find the time. Anyway, below is a little montage of Katie's first pumpkin patch! Enjoy!

Another video of sour face

Everyone seemed to like the last squinty video...so here is another. I know I have to stop encouraging her!

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

What a performer!

A couple days ago, Katie ate a tart strawberry and made the funniest sour face. I started cracking up and, since she is a show off, she had to keep making the face to make me laugh. Well, now she does it at random meals to get a reaction. Of course, Grandma wanted to check it out and I was able to get it on video at tonight's dinner. Dinner was chicken, squash, peas and cheese...nothing tart at all!

I know I need to stop laughing or she will never stop, but I just can't help it!

Oh yeah, Daddy can do it too.

Cake for Katie

Katie is officially 1 and had a great birthday to prove it. She wasn't a big fan of the cake, but I guess that isn't such a bad thing. She did her best to eat it, but that sticky icing was no fun.
Before:

After:
She got lots of great gifts...a "laugh and learn" house, clothes, new soft shoes, a cell phone, a big monkey and, how appropriate, a big toy box! She also had a great time with her cousin Ian and Mom Mom (her great grandmother)!

Happy birthday baby girl!

She's lucky!

I told Katie that she needed to walk by her first birthday and it seems that she's listened. She is still getting the hang out of it, but can go about 5-10 steps without falling. Here is a little video, although it is not great because I turned the camera sideways. Either way...it is proof!

One year ago - Sept 22nd

On this date, one year ago...

...I was pretty tired, as I didn't sleep well the night before. I still had some cramping and was getting anxious and wondering if this was the start of labor. I had a feeling things were going to get started soon (Katie's due date was 9/23), so I felt the need to get things done. I went, with my Mom, to get my hair cut. I thought I was having contractions but they were pretty infrequent. When I arrived to get my hair done, they asked when I was due. I said "tomorrow" and got a kick out of the shocked faces.

After my hair cut, we went to Wegmans for some groceries. I'm not sure where Andrew was, but I remember being with my parents. I remember my Dad wanted us to all get iced tea and sit outside, so we did. While we sat there, I had a couple contractions and my dad was talking to me about who knows what. He asked me something and I didn't answer...my mom said "She's having a contraction, she can't talk to you!". It was after this trip that we were pretty sure Katie was on her way.

For the rest of the afternoon, I was writing down contraction times. They were pretty infrequent, so Andy wasn't timing them. Later that night, I called the doctor and said they were about 15-20 minutes apart, but really painful. He said to wait.

So, we went downstairs for the night and watched "Blades of Glory". I will never forget that awful awful movie because I was in such pain throughout the whole thing (not just because the movie sucked). I had to keep pushing up off the couch because each contraction felt like someone stabbing me in the pubic bone. At this point, Andy was timing them. Around 8pm, they were about 6-7 minutes apart and the doctor had us come to the hospital.

After sitting in 66 traffic, we arrived and were set up in a room. I was checked...still 3 cm. My parents stayed for a few hours and I sent them home, as things didn't seem to be happening tonight. I spent the rest of the night pushing up off the bed and groaning, with every contraction. I was afraid to move because the heart monitor kept falling off and losing the baby's heartbeat. Oh, the memories!

<--Smiling through a contraction (you can tell because I'm gripping the bed rail)

One year ago - Sept 21st

On this date, one year ago...
...I went to the doctor for my final checkup before my induction. I'll spare everyone the details, but my doctor tried to "get things started" for me, as I was 3 cm already. It was painful, but luckily my mom was there and we went out for breakfast afterwards.

All night, I had some cramping, but nothing unbearable.
Could this be it?

A proud moment

We were having dinner at one of my new favorite restaurants (Masala Wok) and noticed a guy eating alone and taking notes. We kept looking at him because he was getting a couple meals and we wondered if he was a food critic or a writer for a local paper. Anyway, he finishes eating and starts to walk over. I'm thinking "CRAP, he is going to comment on us looking at him" or "CRAP, he is going to say something about the food that Katie keeps dropping on the floor".

So, he comes over and says "I just want to thank you guys for having such a well behaved baby". I think I was in total shock and remember not even knowing how to react. Once it sunk in, I stammered out a "thank you" with a goofy grin on my face. I was so proud and couldn't believe someone would walk over to tell us that (especially a single guy). It made me love Masala Wok even more!

1 year birthday countdown: 6 days...AHHH!

Green mommy update #1

A few months ago, I decided to trade in some of my "old ways" for greener alternatives...not only for benefits to the environment, but in hopes of protecting Katie, as long as I can. Here are some of my product reviews.

Muti-purpose cleaning:
  • Vinegar and water - you really do get over the smell after awhile...and it is only short lived. I've been using this solution to clean our kitchen floors now that Katie is crawling everywhere. I also use it to clean down her highchair cover (and everything else that she gets messy during mealtimes).
  • Method Grapefruit all surface cleaner - toted as a naturally derived, non toxic cleaner. I've been using this to clean kitchen counters because I love the scent and feel that it does a better job than vinegar. Bonus - it is biodegradable.

Kitchen sink:

  • I've been sprinkling baking soda all over the sink and then dousing it with vinegar. I do love the "sizzling" sound it makes and hope that indicates some breaking down of dirt. After it sits for awhile, I use the baking soda/vinegar paste to scrub the sink and then wash it all down the drain with hot water. It has been working fairly well, but does not get it as sparkly as windex or other steel cleaners.

Baby products:

  • Placemats - I've always been paranoid about having Katie eat off restaurant tables, especially because she can't use a plate (it will just end up on the floor). After numerous meals out, I noticed some kids with disposable placemats stuck on the table. I looked into them and found that they were very convenient and had pull off sticky strips that stuck to the table. When you were done with the meal, you just roll it up and toss it. The more I thought about it, it seemed very wasteful, not to mention expensive. They run about $8.99 for a 15-20 pack. I went to the store and instead purchased the Tiny Diner Placemat. It rolls up and fits in a diaper bag and also uses suction to adhere to tables (although they don't always work on vinyl tablecloths). It has been working well so far and I'd like to think that we're saving a few trees by not purchasing all the disposable placemats.
  • Seventh Generation Free & Clear dish soap - I've been using this to clean Katie's bottles, sippy cups and bowls/plates. It is non toxic, no dyes, colorings, etc. I will admit that it does not get as sudsy as a typical dish liquid, but her things get clean nonetheless. I also like that I'm not using a colored, fragranced soap on her things.
  • Method baby wash - I'm still using this and you can read more about it on my previous post. http://babylamken.blogspot.com/2008/06/method-baby-squeaky-green-baby-wash.html

Those are all my reviews for now. I'm currently on the search for "green" hardwood floor cleaner and toilet bowl cleaner. Any suggestions?

She stands! (NC vacation)

We just got back from our NC vacation and I thought I'd share some beach pictures. Katie was not crazy about the ocean...I think the crashing waves and noise was a little frightening. On a more positive note, our big girl started standing recently and had to show off on the beach.
Check her out!

She had lots of "firsts" on her vacation. First time in the ocean, first bowl of grits (she loved them), first snapper, first sweet potato fries (so good), first taste of sausage and first homemade mac and cheese. She loved hanging out with Grandma and Grandpa, too. Below is a video of Grandma making her laugh, while acting like a goofball. Note the "fake" laugh from both Grandma and Katie.

Katie's photo shoot

To get ready for her big birthday next month, we went to Portrait Innovations today. Although I wasn't thrilled with some of the backgrounds and poses from the photographer, overall I am happy with the end result...thanks to Katie's smiley face! There were some other children there that didn't smile for the pictures, which was a shame.
The photographer let her do 3 outfits because she was so easy. Here are a few great shots from yesterday!

In other birthday news, the invitations have been sent and that is about it! I am practicing her cake this weekend and if that doesn't work out, I'll order something. I do have almost all her gifts bought, so that is all she needs!

Child care study

This is a pretty scary study and one of the few that have compared fatalities/injuries at FDCs (Family Day Cares), In home (nanny), and Day Care Centers. It isn't a pleasant topics, but it is something that most parents would find interesting. I actually read the whole thing, but I know most people won't want to...so, I suggest looking at the tables on Page 13 and 21.

4-H Fair

Last weekend was the Frying Pan 4-H fair. Since I used to do it as a child, I thought it was time for Katie to check it out! She saw lots of animals, a horse show, dog competition and she loved watching the cloggers!

She also loved walking in the grass and was very cute in her white dress. Grandma and Grandpa were trying to get her to walk on her own...

20 Baby Products to Traumatize your Infant

When you become a parent, you are all about making things easier...feeding, napping, changing, etc. You think of ingenious ways to get things done and sometimes just pray that someone would make a product to help you. Well, here are some real products that were invented with that purpose in mind (or maybe the inventor was just on drugs). Most of them are scary...it makes you wonder if a parent came up with them or some single person trying to make a buck.

Aquatots #2 video

Someone requested an Aquatots video...and I aim to please. Enjoy!

Aquatots Class #2

We are having a great time with Katie, in the pool. She seems to be getting more comfortable and loves posing for pictures and waving to Grandma. Next week, we were warned that there will be dunking involved...so be prepared for some interesting photos (any maybe a video if Grandma can catch it)! I can't let anyone dunk MY baby except for me, so I'll be getting in next week.

Baby Jamey - Day 3

We just made a trip to the hospital and the new family is doing well. I know everyone is dying to see pictures...so let's get to it!

Jamey taking a much needed nap...
Katie was checking Jamey out, but was a little disappointed that he didn't want to play with her (yet)!

And, finally, a little video of Jamey...

Welcome to the club, Melissa & Glenn!

I'm proud to announce that Melissa, my long time HS friend, is a mommy! James Morgan was born last night via c-section at 9:16pm.

9 pounds, 1 ounce and 22 1/4 inches

Both parents are so happy and Jamey is doing great. I wish them the best in their new "adventure" as parents. It is the craziest, busiest, most rewarding job on Earth! You can never really understand, until you have your first. Welcome to the club guys!

We are your friends...the backyardigans

Katie is teething or not feeling well because she's grumpy and refusing bottles and food. She's probably had about half her normal food today and we're trying everything to get her to eat. Lately, she calms down and drinks her bottle if I sing to her...so during dinnertime, we both stood there singing the Backyardigans theme song because it was the only way to get her to take the bottle. She only drank 3 ounces total, but we probably went through the song about 10 times. We seriously think we're losing it...mentally and physically.

Old Katie...come back to us!

Aquatots Class #1

Katie had her first Aquatots class recently and it was fun (for me at least!)
Grandma and Grandpa came along, since Daddy was sick. Katie loves the bath tub and her baby pool, but I think she was a little hesitant about such a big pool. We learned how to get into the pool with a baby and also did exercises to teach them swimming on their belly and backs. As you can see, Katie did not enjoy the back float/swim. I don't think she liked her head in the water...or maybe she was scared because she couldn't see me.

At least she was stylish in her pink and purple bathing suit! The other babies are all around her age and an equal mix of boys and girls, so it is fun to see them all in the water. In between each "exercise", we get back in a circle and sing songs. Katie really liked that! On the left is a picture of her fellow Aquatots (we're on the left hand side of the circle).
They also have a ramp on the side of the pool, so they kids can "walk" out. That was one of Katie's favorite parts, mainly because she could see Grandma taking pictures at the top of the ramp. We know she's a poser! We missed this weekend's class because of a trip to NJ, but we'll be back there next weekend and I think Daddy is going in! Woohoo!

9 month milestones

Katie had her 9 month appointment this week and everything was great! She's meeting all her milestones, which include: waving, clapping, crawling, standing, saying Mamama and Dadada and using the pincer grasp.

Below are her latest stats:
Weight: 19 pounds, 3.5 ounces - 60-65th percentile
Length: 29.5 inches - 95th percentile
Head: 17 3/4 inches - 70th percentile

Thankfully she did not need any shots and only had a heel prick to test her hemoglobin levels, which were good. They mainly told us to keep doing what we're doing (or not doing) and start to introduce table foods. Let the fun begin!

Method Baby - Squeaky Green Baby Wash

Last week, I picked up a bottle of Method Baby wash at Target ($6.99) and gave it a go.

Pros:
  • nice, mild scent (sweet, slight coconut, baby smell)
  • main ingredients consist of rice milk, mallow and olive oil (soft and 99% natural ingredients)
  • tear free and hypoallergenic
  • great shape (pump bottle for easy access and the top comes off to use as a rinse cup)
Cons:
  • pricey, but at least it should last for awhile
  • doesn't lather (maybe lather does not occur in nature?)

Shake shake shake

I don't think this video needs much explanation. Shake it baby!!!

Mommy is going green

I caved and got a mommy's helper/nanny/house cleaner to help me out. This week was her first week and I think it is going to take some getting used to. As soon as she arrived, she started cleaning my stove. I was upstairs, talking to my boss, when I smelled the fumes and ran downstairs to "rescue" Katie. If anyone has ever smelled oven/stove cleaner, it is AWFUL!

After that incident, I told her that Katie can't be around all those chemicals and I was again motivated to "go green". I've looked into making my own cleaners before, but just like homemade baby food, I don't always have the time. So, I did some research and went out to buy some Seventh Generation and Method cleaners. Has anyone used these? I've used Method a couple times, only because it was grapefruit scented and thought it would be nice. I didn't know it was non-toxic until recently. I'm really interested to find what others think of these cleaners. I'm also going to start using white vinegar and baking soda, as I hear that works really well.

On another note, I found Method has also come out with a new line - MethodBaby. The line includes diaper cream, lotion, shampoo and wash. They have one set of products for babies and another for older kids. They have a baby hair/body wash made of rice milk that I'm going to try out. Also, it is in a pump container...a definite bonus. I've been using shampoo and wash bottles for Katie's baths and it is a pain to open and close them every time (especially with wet hands).
As I try to go green, I will post product reviews here. Wish me luck and let me know if you have any favorite products!

Pool party anyone?

Katie starts Aquatots at the end of the month, so I thought it was time for her to get used to a pool. The pool may only have a few inches of water, but I was still jealous! Check out my little guppy!

Happy Mother's Day!

Here's to all the mothers out there...for having the hardest job on earth, but also the most rewarding.

Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ~Elizabeth Stone

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new. ~Rajneesh

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren

God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers. ~Jewish Proverb

My mom is a neverending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune. ~Graycie Harmon

Insanity is hereditary; you get it from your children. ~Sam Levenson
